Annie Krim-Déjean, Mare Nostrum (Our Sea), France, 2025

A powerful accordion that takes as its theme the thousands of migrants fleeing their homelands and seeking safe harbor anywhere they can. It's a dangerous journey in which far too many are not making it to their final destinations.

8 pages, individually 6" x 4" and when unfolded 2ft 1"

Below is a translation of Krim-Déjean's poem:

Our Sea

Eyes filthy and bulging

Hands clutching at the liquid void

Arms thrashing the water, hands seeking a lifeline

Mouth twisted in despair

Their bodies float in your bitter waters

Their mad journey marked by your murderous waves

Their fear, their screams—swallowed, strangled

Mare Nostrum, so admired, so venerated

Mare Nostrum, never sated

Mare Nostrum, burial ground for the hopes of

The wretched of the earth
