Another amazing gatefold leporello from Le Dernier Cri! Both the artists, M.S. Bastian (real name Marcel Sollberger) and Isabelle L., were born in Biel, Switzerland and studied graphic design, and have since established successful careers within that field. In 2000 they began loosely collaborating and by 2004 it had become a permanent partnership.
Both were influenced by pulp fiction and comic books with an emphasis on the underground and alternative traditions. Particular artists who influenced them were people such as Gary Panter, Mark Beyer, Art Spiegelman and David Sandlin amongst others, as well as the larger French and American comic traditions.
This leporello with its title referencing armegeddon is a full blown end-of-the-world apocalypse depicted in nightmarish colors and accompanied by all the terrible things that happen in such an event. When you open up the two gatefolds you have 6ft 9" of absolute mayhem and terror with all sorts of historical references and set in the middle of the central panel are the words "Arbeit Macht Frei" which should alert every reader that you have entered a space from which there is no return.
14 double-sided pages (different widths), the leporello itself measures 13" x 12" and when the two gatefolds are opened the publication measures 6ft 9".
Note: examples of work by Panter, Spiegelman and Sandlin can be found on this blog. For further information about Le Dernier Cri see my article about them on this blog at: https://accordionpublications.blogspot.com/search?q=le+dernier+cri
